Остров был заселен еще с древнеримских времен, когда-то он был убежищем для пиратов, а позднее принадлежал монахам. Великий итальянский поэт Данте Алигьери гостил на острове в 1304 году и посвятил ему свои строки в "Божественной Комедии". С 1429 года остров становится важным духовным и религиозным центром, здесь изучают философию и богословие. В 1830 году на руинах монастыря была построена резиденция по проекту знаменитого архитектора того времени. А в 1870 году территория острова перешла во владение богатого герцога Gaetano de Ferrari из Генуи, который руками выдающегося архитектора Luigi Rovelli создал шедевр в нео-готическом венецианском стиле, вызывающий восхищение по сей день. С тех пор наследники герцога владеют Дворцом-Резиденцией и великолепным парком. С 2002 года остров открыт для посещения.
